About Nancy

K-10 Dog Training was born on two dreams.  First the dream of working with dogs and second the dream of owning her own business with her husband.

Nancy's dreams became a reality as she enrolled in and hence has graduated from ABC Animal Behavior College.  Nancy is an ABC CERTIFIED Dog Trainer, ABC MENTOR and a CANINE GOOD CITIZEN (CGC) EVALUATOR through the American Kennel Club (AKC).  K-10 Dog Training is a Therapy Pet Evaluator NOW for K-10 Dog Training itself.

Nancy not only has volunteered at the Sussex County SPCA in Georgetown, DE but Nancy LaFontaine worked with the Georgetown Sussex Correctional Institute where she implemented her successful Training Program with dogs and the inmates/handlers to help them become more adoptable.  Nancy was also involved with the Lower Delaware Therapy Dogs.

Nancy is an ABC (Animal Behavior College) Certified Dog Trainer with her own local business running Basic Advanced Obedience classes and the AKC (American Kennel Club) Canine Good Citizen (CGC) classes and  testing.  K-10 Dog Training also works to help Socialize your dog/puppy, specifically know as 'DOGs Working with DOGs' curriculum.  Private lessons are available as well.  Call, 302-236-2497, or email info@k10dogtraining.com for details to find out what suits you and your doggie.

K-10 Dog Training has been in business and training successfully dogs and their owners since 2009!  Using Positive Reinforcement Methods in order to motivate the dogs to perform and rework their bad behaviors and/or habits into good, positive behaviors.

                                                                  PAWS FOR A CAUSE:
(Working with the Georgetown Sussex Correctional Institute)

Lauren Pearce began research on how to implement a prison puppy training program as her thesis for a Masters Degree in Public Administration from Wilmington University. While conducting her research, Lauren found that twenty states currently have active training programs in prisons nationwide, with the first one starting at a women's facility in Washington, started by Sister Pauline Quinn. The focus of such a program is to rescue canines from local animal shelters and prevent possible euthanization, provide vocational and emotional rehabilitation to prison inmates, improve inmate/prison staff relationships, and serve needy members of the community. Lauren is currently investigating the possibility of establishing a Non-Profit organization that will help provide funding and support to this program at Sussex Correctional Institution.

As a result of Lauren Pearce's efforts to get a prision training program together, we are proud to announce that K-10 Dog Training and the Georgetown Sussex Correctional Institution have begun the puppy training program with the inmates of the Georgetown SCI facility. The program is called PAWS FOR A CAUSE.  At the Georgetown SCI facility where selected inmates have care of the dogs. K-10 Dog Training is assisting and training the inmates with the K-10 Dog Training Basic Obedience Training Program bringing the dogs not just through the regular obedience course but finishing the dogs with the AKC Canine Good Citizen program (as they quaify to be tested) in a full 8 week course. The final result is that the dogs will be adoptable to the public.

The efforts to get this program up and running go especially to Lauren Pearce for her heart's desire to see a program such as this, PAWS FOR A CAUSE, from the dream and now as a reality. Also, great gratitude goes to the tremendous time and work from the Georgetown Sussex Correctional Institution's Deputy Warden Linda Valentino, and her assistant Deputy Sargent Sharon Mears which have worked so very hard to institute the program in the Georgetown SCI facility. Also to the Georgetown SPCA for helping assist us with the care of the dogs:  the supplying of the food and the veterinarian care as needed.

K-10 Dog Training worked with the inmates to train the dogs, giving these dogs another chance of a brightful, fulfilling future with their future new families.

It had been an honor to work with all in this program!
